Idaho’s Saint Joe River Named
World’s Highest Navigable River

The Saint Joe River in northern Idaho has earned the title of the world's highest navigable river, according to the World Record Academy. Flowing through the scenic Bitterroot Mountains, the river reaches an elevation of approximately 2,128 feet (649 meters) above sea level, making it the highest river that boats can regularly travel.
The Saint Joe River stretches about 140 miles, winding through pristine forests and remote landscapes before eventually joining Coeur d’Alene Lake. Despite its high elevation, it remains accessible to boats, including fishing vessels, kayaks, and small motorboats, particularly in its lower and middle sections.
The river’s unique geography and relatively gentle flow make it an appealing spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Boaters and anglers frequent its waters for trout fishing, while kayakers navigate its clear currents. In addition to recreation, the river holds historical significance, having served as an important route for early settlers and loggers in the region. Read More…
