Idaho Senate Passes Historic School Voucher Bill, Sending It to Governor’s Desk

The Idaho Senate has approved House Bill 93, marking the first time a school voucher proposal has cleared the Legislature after years of advocacy. The bill, now awaiting Gov. Brad Little’s signature, would allocate $50 million in taxpayer funds to families choosing alternative schooling. Eligible parents could receive grants of up to $5,000 per student or $7,500 for students with special needs, covering expenses like tuition, tutoring, and transportation.
Supporters argue the bill expands school choice, ensuring financial constraints don’t dictate education options. Critics, however, warn of a lack of transparency and potential harm to public schools, as the funds would be managed by the Idaho State Tax Commission with limited oversight. The program would prioritize lower-income families, but opponents fear it could divert resources from Idaho’s 300,000 public school students while benefiting only a fraction.
Gov. Little has previously supported school choice but emphasized the need for oversight. Whether he signs the bill could shape the future of education funding in Idaho.

Know Before You Hunt: Bear Identification Test Now Mandatory in Idaho

Starting January 1, all black bear hunters in Idaho must complete an online Bear ID course and pass a bear identification test. This ensures hunters can distinguish between black bears and federally protected grizzly bears, which cannot be hunted. Since both species inhabit parts of Idaho, hunters should use multiple physical features—rather than size or color alone—for identification. Educational materials are available to help hunters prepare for the test. Read More…
