Coeur d'Alene Teen Wins Prestigious Barron Prize for STEM Advocacy

Adeline Smith, a senior at Coeur d'Alene High School, has been honored with the 2024 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. She co-founded Growing the STEM, a nonprofit supporting math and science education for underserved Idaho schools. Through her efforts, over 100 teen volunteers help coach more than 900 students across 14 schools. The nonprofit's programs, including Mathletes and STEAM Club, benefit low-income and underrepresented students. Smith's work has earned significant community support, funding, and an annual budget of over $100,000. (Read More…)
Coeur d'Alene Teen is honored for his ‘MacGyver Style Rescue' on Hayden Lake

A 14-year-old boy named Fisher DePriest helped rescue two people from a crashed vehicle at Hayden Lake on August 4. DePriest, who was fishing nearby, saw the vehicle about 200 feet down an embankment. He called 911 and used his fishing equipment to pry open the roof of the vehicle and free the trapped occupants. For his quick thinking and heroic actions, DePriest received the first Citizen Commendation for Heroism and Valor from the Northern Lakes Fire District. Fire Chief Pat Riley praised DePriest's actions and even suggested he consider a future career in firefighting. (Read More…)

Idaho voters can request absentee ballots for the November election through their county clerk’s office or online at the Idaho Votes website. Pheasant Season Approaches for
Idaho’s Panhandle Hunters

Pheasant hunting season in Idaho's Panhandle is set to begin soon, with youth-only hunts running from October 5-11. Starting October 12, adults can participate, with non-residents joining from October 17.
Two wildlife management areas, Boundary-Smith Creek and Coeur d'Alene River, will be stocked with pheasants weekly through December. Hunters need specific permits in stocked areas and must follow regional rules, including wearing hunter orange. (Read More…)

48 Hours to Feature "The Bathtub Murder of Kendy Howard" This Saturday

This weekend, 48 Hours will feature a program on the 2021 murder of Kendy Howard. Initially reported as a suicide by her husband, former Idaho State Police trooper Dan Howard, investigators found evidence suggesting it was staged. Items like a packed duffle bag and recently cleaned towels raised suspicions. Three years later, Dan Howard was charged with Kendy's murder and sentenced to life in prison.
