Fat Bear Week 2024: Celebrating Nature's Chubbiest Champions!

Fat Bear Week is an annual online competition celebrating the success of brown bears as they fatten up for winter hibernation in Alaska's Katmai National Park. Hosted by explore.org, participants can vote for their favorite bear based on photos showing their weight gain. The event aims to raise awareness of bear conservation and the ecosystem's health.

North Idaho Businesses Unite for
United Way's Day of Caring

Around 200 volunteers from businesses and nonprofits in Bonner and Kootenai counties came together for United Way's annual Day of Caring. Volunteers assisted with various projects, including yard work, painting, and food packaging, across 16 nonprofit sites in Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint. The effort saved local nonprofits approximately $20,000 in labor costs, promoting community engagement and support. (Read More...)
Liberty Lake Woman Makes History with
24-Mile Swim Across Priest Lake

Kim Bowler, 41, of Liberty Lake, swam the length of Idaho’s Priest Lake, becoming the first woman and second person ever to complete the 24-mile swim. She overcame intense fatigue, wind, and waves during the grueling 20-hour journey. Previously, Bowler was the first to swim the length of Lake Coeur d’Alene in 2022. Though challenging, she sees this accomplishment as proof of her determination and passion for open-water swimming. (Read More...)

Coeur d'Alene Bids Farewell
to Mayor Jim Hammond

Coeur d'Alene Mayor Jim Hammond was honored at a farewell party attended by around 50 people at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library. Described as kind, generous, and a mentor, Hammond's career includes roles as an Idaho State senator, mayor of Post Falls, and city administrator. He resigned as mayor effective August 31 to move to Colorado to be near family. The community expressed deep gratitude for his service to Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho. (Read More...)

Local Doctor Accused of Voyeurism and Child Exploitation Pleads Not Guilty

A Coeur d'Alene orthopedic surgeon, Spencer Greendyke, has pleaded not guilty to charges involving video voyeurism and the sexual exploitation of a child. The allegations involve hiding a camera in a staff bathroom at his medical office. His trial is scheduled for early February 2025. He also faces a civil lawsuit filed by 16 anonymous plaintiffs, alleging hidden recordings in his office dating back to 2005. The plaintiffs seek damages exceeding $10,000. (Read More…)
